“Am not aware Gov Obiano is on EFCC watch list but address bandits as terrorists henceforth” –Malami
The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has insisted he is not aware of Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State being placed on the watch list of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Malami stated this while speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday night where he also confirmed that bandits have now been branded terrorists and will be treated as such going forward.
The Minister of Justice also denied that he was part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign council of the Anambra governorship election.
“I’m in all sincerity not aware and I don’t have to be aware because the EFCC is established by law.
“Their responsibilities are demarcated by law and what they do are demarcated by law, not the Attorney-General or the office of the Attorney-General,” Malami said.
The Anambra State Government has said Obiano is ready to answer questions about his tenure in office, and that the Governor, who is currently in the US, did not leave the country in disguise.
This was in reaction to the news that the EFCC placed a watch on Obiano, who will conclude his tenure on March 17, and suspected that he may leave the country after then.
On bandits been classified as terrorists, he disclosed that a court order had been sought and obtained and will soon be gazetted. Reacting to the assertion that it took too long to declare them terrorists, Malami explained that as a challenge that kept evolving, the government needed to address the issues as they arose. Malami was asked how the bandits should be described and he said: “Terrorists. Terrorists within the context of the order granted by the court.” He added: “With or without the gazette. The gazette is a formal process and it doesn’t take away the legality and effectiveness or the legality of an order of the court. “The decision of the court is effective simplicity inherently in its own right without necessarily awaiting the gazetting process, but the gazetting process is part of what is associated with the formality of it. “So, in effect, with the pronouncement of the court, the incidence of the effect associated with the judgment had taken automatic effect.” He affirmed that they are now to be treated as terrorists and all the security agencies have the information on the new status.
