The Gunners, Arsenal club of London woke from the dead with a sloppy defence and unimpressive attacking moves to earn a vital away goal as it fell 1-2 to Villarreal at the Estadio de la Caramica in Spain on Thursday night in the EUROPA league first semi-final.
Manu Trigueng had poked in the first goal in 5th minute and Raul Albiol made it double in the 29th minute raising hopes that the London team will be made a barbecue.
Nicholas Pepe however shown well scoring 73rd minute via a penalty in a match that saw two red cards, one for each side Dani Ceballo (Arsenal in 57’) and Etienne Capoue (Villarreal in 80’) meaning that both will be missing in the 2nd leg on May 6.
Villarreal has appeared in Europa league semis twice losing to Porto in 2010-11 and 1-3 to Liverpool in 2015-16.
Arsenal never won the Europa cup but was semifinalist 2017-18 and Runners-up 2018-19.
Old Trafford was set on fire as Manchester United went goal gaga roasting Roma 6-2 in the 2nd semi-final. Unbelievable!
Bruno Fernades and Edinson Cavani got a brace each (Bruno-9’, 71’P; Cavani 48’, 64’) while Pogba scored 75’ and Mason Greenwood ensured the wine was popped before the final whistle as he scored 86’.
Roma goals came through the boots of Corenzo Pellegrini 15’ and Edwin Dzeko 33’.
That makes the second leg difficult for Roma. Roma’s greatest Europa league achievement was losing to Inter Milan in the 1990-91 finals whereas Manchester United won it in 2016-17.
