AWCON: Two devastating headers from Uchenna Kanu put Ghana in tight corner; Nigeria beat Ghana’s 2-0

A first half brace through Uchenna Kanu was what Super Falcons of Nigeria needed to claim advantage in the 1st leg of the African Women Cup of Nations match against hard fighting Black Queens of Ghana at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Wednesday.

Uchenna terrorized gleefully the Ghanaian defence scoring the 1st goal through a header from an Ortega cross in the 21st minute and nodding the 2nd goal in from a brilliant corner kick in the 27th minute.

Dreaded Nigerian Captain Aseezat Oshoala who bangs in goals with ease in Europe fired blank from close marking while Ortega who tormented the Ghanaians was hacked down and stretchered off in the 2nd half from a hard tackle that only attracted a yellow instead of a straight red card. The ladies took advantage of water breaks in each half to cool off the scorching sun.

Both teams will meet again on Sunday for the 2nd led at the Accra Sports Stadium at 5pm Nigerian time (4pm Ghana Time) in a decisive encounter that will eliminate one of Africa’s strongest team.

The losing side will have no chance to go to the World Cup as the 12th AWCON finals in Morocco next year will determine Africa’s representatives.

The Super Falcons have lost steam in recent times losing embarrassingly 2-4 to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the Aishat Buhari maiden cup finals.
