Bandits in Nigeria have become so emboldened that they struck at Nigeria’s foremost military university, Nigerian Defence Academy, in the early hours of Tuesday days after the Information Minister; Lai Mohammed told Journalists in America that the country has drastically reduced banditry and terrorism.
The Army has disclosed however that a combined force of soldiers and Air Force men are currently in pursuit of daredevil gunmen that attacked its barracks in Kaduna on Tuesday.
The gunmen invaded the institution located along Airport Road, Afaka, in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State around 1.00am, killing two and kidnapping one.
In a statement by the Academy Public Relations Officer, Bashir Muhd Jajira, the academy confirmed the attack adding that the assailants will be brought to book.
The statement read, “The security architecture of the Nigerian Defence Academy was compromised early this morning by unknown gunmen who gained access into the residential area within the Academy in Afaka. During the unfortunate incident, we lost two personnel and one was abducted.
“The Academy in collaboration with the 1Division Nigerian Army and Air Training Command as well as other security agencies in Kaduna state has since commenced pursuit of the unknown gunmen within the general area with a view to tracking them and rescue the abducted personnel.
“The NDA community and Cadets are safe in the Academy. We assure the general public that these unknown gunmen would soon be apprehended and the abducted personnel rescued.”
Reports said the bandits invaded “in their large number” and shot dead two officers identified as Lieutenant Commodore Wulah and Flight Lieutenant CM Okoronwo.
They also abducted Major Datong while 2Lieutenant Onah sustained gunshot injuries and currently receiving treatment,
“It was a terrible experience; the bandits took advantage of the time when most people had gone to bed to attack the barracks.”
“Right now, the whole barracks is under lock and key and security has been beefed up so that the bandits cannot leave the barracks because it is believed that they are still within,” the source had said.
One of the officers who were injured in the attack is currently being treated at a hospital within the barracks.
The source said that there are, however, fears that the bandits may decide to kill the officers in a bid to escape.
We learnt in another report that the bandits actually came in through the main gate dressed in Army uniform and upon entrance went straight for the officer’s quarters.
Gunshots aroused officers from their sleep but before they could put themselves together, the bandits left with an officer.
