BUHARI APPOINTS DONGBANO MENSEM ACTING PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL COURT OF APPEAL.


President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed 62 year old Monica Dongbano Mensem as the acting President of the Court of Appeal in accordance with section 238 (4 and (5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Justice Mensem who hails from Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State is to act for a period of six months with effect from March 6 pending the appointment of a substantive President of the Court of Appeal with the approval of the Senate.

She replaces Honorable Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa who formally quits the service from March 6 after the mandatory 70 years.


According to the Special Assistant to the President on the media, Mallam Garba Shehu the appointment of Justice Mensem was as a result of the recommendation of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad to the President of the Federal Republic. She is the most senior Judge of the Court of Appeal.

Justice Mensem it will be recalled sat on the five man Appeal Panel that upheld the ruling of the Governorship Election Tribunal in Rivers State which ordered the sacking of Governor Nyeson Wike of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and a rerun within 90 days. The Supreme Court upturned the judgment.


Justice Monica Mensem a mother of four children and two grandchildren with unique love for writing, reading and golfing obtained her LL.B and LL.M from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria with a Post Graduate Diploma from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London and is the daughter of the retired Appeal Court Judge, Justice M. B. Douglas Mensem.

She started her legal pursuit as a Registrar at the Plateau State High Court in 1979.
