President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the lockdown on Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory for another two weeks with effect from 2359 hours of Easter Monday.

He has also signed the Quarantine order and additional regulations to provide clarity will be released soon.

The President in a sixty paragraph message to the nation read in twenty minutes said the coronavirus pandemic is no joke but a matter of life and death pointing out that even Makkah, the Holy City was locked down and the Pope had to deliver his Easter message online.

President Buhari said, “No country can afford the full impact of a sustained restriction of movement on its economy. I am fully aware of the great difficulties experienced especially by those who earn a daily wage such as traders, dayworkers, artisans and manual workers”.

He stated that the social register will be increased from 2,6m to 3.6m households throughout the federation and that will be concluded within two weeks.

According to the President, 7,000 health workers were trained in 19 states , as he commended the health care workers who he called the heroes of Nigeria promising that the motivational package of the health workers will soon be announced.

President Buhari expressed sadness that global statistics of the Coronavirus (covid-19) increased geometrically in the last two weeks but within the same period, Nigerian statistics was 171 confirmed cases to 328 as at Easter Monday, two deaths to ten deaths. He said Lagos and Abuja accounts for 71% of the Nigerian figures hence the focus on those areas.

He also said 92% of identified contacts have been reached and Nigeria now double the number of testing laboratories in the country and the nation can now afford to test 1,500 patients per day.
