President Buhari Tuesday approved the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to Chair FG’s Team to engage with Twitter in dialogue over suspension placed on the international social media platform by Nigeria. The Federal Government’s team also comprises the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice; Minister of Communications and Digital Economy; Minister of Foreign Affairs; Minister of Works and Housing; Minister of State for Labor and Employment as well as other relevant government agencies. “Following the indefinite suspension of its operations in Nigeria, for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence, Twitter wrote to President Buhari seeking to engage with the Federal Government over the suspension, with a view to charting a path forward”.
FG had expressed pains that the social media platform and indeed all the social media platforms were being used especially by the Youths to undermine the Federal Government.
The Office of the Attorney-General threatened to drag any Nigerian using Twitter to court and ordered media houses to follow suit.
But some cleric bounced Nigeria stating that they would not obey and that they were not bound by the Nigerian order as they were present in several countries of the world and that the use of Twitter is a universal law on freedom of expression.
As President Buhari ordered the public release of his negotiating team with Twitter Tuesday morning, the ECOWAS Court of Justice restrained him and his government from prosecuting any Nigerian until the determination of the substantive suit brought by SERAP and others.
