Delta wins National Sports Festival for the 6th time with 158 gold medals.

The curtain was drawn on the 20th National Sports Festival tagged *Edo 2020* on Wednesday with Defending champions ,Team Delta retaining the top spot on the medals table with 158 gold medals for the 6th consecutive time.

The event ended in a grand style with a colorful closing ceremony that had live musical performances spiced with the relays finals that held the scanty spectators at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin spellbound.

Host Edo State trailed in second position with 129 Gold with Bayelsa state emerging third best with 56 Gold.

One of the high points of the Festival was the feat of 10 year old, Stephanie Onusiriuka of Team Anambra who won gymnastic gold, 2 silvers 1 bronze as well as the outstanding 15 medal haul of Asagbe Ifiaezibe of Team Bayelsa.

Top female athlete, Grace Nwokocha also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after winning the 100m and 200m events.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and sports Development has assured that it would continue to collaborate with State Directors of Sports to ensure sports development in the country as well as to empower the Youths in line with the policy thrust of President Muhammadu Buhari.

This assurance was given by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare when he met with the new executive of the Forum of Directors of Sports in Benin.

Dare said Government was determined to empower the Youth through sports for the economic growth of the country.

While commending the State Directors of Sports for conducting a peaceful, free and fair election, Dare assured that the Ministry would sustain the existing cordial relationship with the Directors to identify talents that would represent the country at international competitions.

The Minister said the State Directors of Sports from the 36 states and FCT deserve commendation for their maturity and unity of purpose which culminated into a peaceful and fair election.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Nebeolisa Anako acknowledged the State Directors of Sports/ Zonal Chairmen as a formidable team that had always added value to sports development in the country.

He urged them to maintain the cordial relationship that ensured the successful hosting of the 20th National Sports festival tagged Edo 2020.

Also speaking, the newly elected Chairman, Isaac Isaac said their visit was to officially present the new Exco to the Management team of the Ministry and to seek collaboration with the Ministry.
