Fire guts Ondo State INEC office in Akure Thursday night; 5,000 card readers consumed by fire.

At least 5000 card readers may have been consumed by fire as fire gutted the head office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akure, Thursday.

Men of the Fire Service were on the ground to put out the inferno which started about 8 pm and gutted the container housing Smart Card Readers, the electoral body tweeted.

Ondo Chief Fire Officer, Adanalwo Philips was quoted as confirming that efforts are on to put the fire incident under control.

“The fire only gutted a container in a confined section, which is very close to the office of the Commission.

“It was about spreading inside the offices when we raced to the venue but we have been able to put the situation under control. is not what we should worry about.


Barrister Festus Okoye.

The National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye, who is in Ondo State in connection with preparations for the Ondo State Governorship election scheduled for 10th October 2020, rushed to the office at about 8 pm,” INEC added.

Although the cause of the inferno is yet to be known, Barrister Okoye assured that an investigation would be carried out about to unravel what triggered the fire with immediate effect.

Some staff of the Commission and the Administrative Secretary of the State, Mr. Popoola were also at the INEC office.
