Buhari congratulates Obaseki while Eze-Iyamu has accepted defeat.
The incumbent Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has been returned elected as Governor of Edo State beating his archrival, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress, APC for the second time in such an election, the first which was in 2016.
President Muhammadu Buhari has already congratulated Obaseki asking him to be magnanimous in victory.
The Independent National Electoral Commission Returning Officer in the election, Prof. Agofure Rukeh. of Federal University of Petroleum Technology, Efurun, returned Obaseki reelected after he polled 307,955 votes to beat his closest challenger and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu who polled 223,619 ballots.
The Returning Officer said having scored the highest number of votes in the election and met all constitutional requirements; he declared Obaseki and his running mate Philip Shuaibu reelected as Governor and Deputy Governor respectively.
According to the Returning Officer, 557,443 persons were accredited for the election. Out of this figure 540,342 people cast their votes. However 12,835 votes were rejected for various electoral infractions.
Fourteen political parties participated in the election. However it was clear from the beginning that it was a straight two-horse race between Obaseki and Iyamu. Both men have come a long way in term of political rivalry.
In 2016 Obaseki, then of the APC also gave Iyamu of the PDP a bloody nose.
Obaseki had promised during the electioneering campaign that the godfather of Eze-Iyamu and former Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole shall be buried politically on September 19 after the guber polls.
Channels Television also reported that ecstatic supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have occupied the streets in Benin City, the state capital celebrating the victory of Godwin Obaseki who defeated Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the governorship election.
The supporters are seen at the roundabout at Ramat Park, King Square, Ring Road, and the state Assembly Complex in wild jubilation.
The jubilation led to traffic build-up in the area but armed security personnel are on the ground to maintain law and order in the area.
Passengers and passers-by are also not left out of the celebration.
Victorious Godwin Obaseki said his triumph at the polls was victory over godfatherism.
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2020 Edo State Governorship Election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has admitted that he lost the election.
Ize-Iyamu agreed that the People’s Democratic Party won the election and he has since congratulated the opposition party.
