Medical Consultants in all Teaching Universities in Nigeria are on strike over irreconcilable differences and grievances with the National Universities Commission (NUC) that regulates university academic operations in the country.

The NUC is demanding that Clinical lectures in Medical Schools throughout the federation must acquire a Doctorate qualification in order for career progression in the University to take place.

National President of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Prof. Kenneth Ozoilo at a Press Conference in Jos, Plateau State directed all Consultant Doctors in the country to down their stethoscopes.

There are Consultants, Senior Consultants and Chief Consultants in the various Teaching Hospitals that guide other younger Doctors medical excellence and maturity.

Prof. Ozoilo said the decision of the NUC without regard to its consequences was very embarrassing to the Medical profession hence the withdrawal of their services with immediate effect and until the irreconcilable differences is straitened out.

Until that is done, only the Medical Registrars and the House Officers will attend to patients in the hospitals. In Medical parlance, the named set off Medical Doctors are still in the learning process and the Federal Government knows this. The Resident Doctors who grows to be Medical Doctors at the University College Hospital, (UCH) Ibadan; The Lagos Teaching Hospital, (LASUTH) and Benin University Teaching Hospital said ”the NUC request was laughable and must have been put forward by a medical ignoramus”.

Efforts to get the Minister of Health comment on the strike was abortive but the aides of the Minister of Labor, Dr. Chris Ngige himself a Medical Doctor said their principal is yet to know about the NUC demand.

A few of the private Universities consulted on the issue said their management were discussing “the strange demand”. A serious gap is at UCH over the strike by Medical Consultants.
