Nigeria celebrates as Akinwunmi Adesina is returned as AFDB President.

Aso Rock, Nigeria’s seat of administration Thursday clinked cup to the toast of her first ever son to be President of the Africa Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina as was re-elected as by its Board of Governors in faraway Abidjan the Ivorien capital.

The AFDB is currently holding its 55th Annual Meetings in Côte d’Ivoire virtually, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Adesina’s re-election was mired in controversy after he was charged with alleged ethical violations and some African countries rose to set up stiff rivalries for the coveted position.

However, after repeated investigations, the former Nigerian Agriculture Minister was cleared of all charges leveled against him, paving the way for his re-election.

Details of his victory were still sifting from Abidjan but it is certain that Dr. Adesina will run the affairs of AFDB for another five years.

An elated President Muhammadu Buhari swiftly congratulated Dr. Adesina for the spectacle of his return and counseled him to formulate ways tomove Africa forward with the policies of AFDB.

On October 7 last year, Buhari nominated Adesina for a second term and raised a diplomatic team to lobby other African countries for support until an American induced allegation was raised of which he was cleared to contest.
