Update (Video link): Black Tuesday at Lekki as soldiers open fire on protesters, Lagos orders probe.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu has ordered a probe into the Black Tuesday of the Lekki Toll Gate confrontation by armed Soldiers who have reported killed one person and wounded several others.

The protesters around 10:30pm of Tuesday said popular Comedian Ayo Makun alias AY was addressing them when the street lights suddenly went off and they were shut at.

The protesters said we were told by our colleagues to kneel down with our flag which was the only thing we carried but the shot severally at us. Videos of wounded fellows and retrieved bullets are now viral on the social media.

Governor Sanwoolu while announcing the incoming probe said he would ensure erring security officers are brought to book warning the Police not to arrest any protester.

He pleaded again with the protesters to leave the road and embrace dialogue.

An International Economist, Prof. Pat Utomi said he was on the roof top of his house near the Lekki Toll Gate and saw how the protesters were being shot at.

“I was on the phone with a top American politician and I was shouting, they are shooting at the protesters. I saw it live. It was a ricochet of shooting”.

He said he just finished a call from a Nigerian Diplomat asking him how the protest can end before he saw the shaking shooting moments of security shooting peaceful protesters in his country.

Patmos Media Line had reported the shooting while it broke at about 1915 hours of Tuesday but latest report says only one ffellow died from gun shots. We were told that bullets were extracted from about three wounded guys on the spot while several others were rushed to hospital.

We sawe several of the youths with blood stained cloths and since the soldiers were still around, reporters had to leave around 23:00 hours for their safety.

Some of the youths who were still at the scene of the incident at about 10:30pm told Olu Philips of Channels Television that they were protesting peacefully when the armed security operatives came and opened fire at them.

“We were protesting peacefully after comedian, AY addressed us. There was nothing, we were still protesting peacefully. Immediately the street lights went off,” one of the protesters said on the News @ 10.

“People started shooting at us. We were able to recognise them, they were putting on uniform, they were military men, soldiers.

“We were lying down, waving our flags, telling them we are protesting peacefully, yet they were shooting directly at us.

“It wasn’t to drive us away, it was to kills us”.
